School Charter

The state-managed charter school application process covers approximately 20 calendar months from the time of the letter of intent to opening your doors for the first year of operation. Schools hoping to open for the 2014-2015 school year were required to submit a letter of intent by January 4, 2013, and the full application by March 1, 2013. The application included detailed information about the school's mission and vision, goals for the school, the education plan, details on the governance of the school, and the school budget. Please click here to view our charter application and here to view the application’s appendices. The NC Office of Charter Schools then reviews the application and appendices and submits their notes to the Charter School Advisory Council.  If the application passes the requirements of the Office of Charter Schools, they schedule a detailed review of the application by a Charter School Advisory Board Subcommittee to further evaluate the school's education plan, governance, and budget. At the end of the review, the Advisory Council votes whether or not to grant the school an interview with the full Advisory Council. Our application was reviewed on April 8, 2013, where we were unanimously recommended to move on to the interview with the full council. Our board was then invited to be interviewed by the fifteen member Advisory Council in Raleigh on June 10. The council allowed for a brief presentation by the school and then asked specific questions of the board prior to voting on whether our school should be recommended to the State Board of Education for a charter. We once again received unanimous approval to open as a charter school. Out of the 70 schools that submitted applications, 26 were granted preliminary approval with the State Board of Education September 2013. The Board attended monthly training in 2013 with the Department of Education, and in January 2014, we were granted final approval as a school.

We were up for renewal in 2018, and our renewal application was approved. Our next renewal will be in 2026.
