5th Grade Ft Caswell Trip

Barrier Island

We will be heading to the NC coast with the 5th grade at the end of April! Students will have the opportunity to tour the USS North Carolina Battleship in Wilmington, visit the North Carolina Aquarium, take the ferry to Southport and then stay the night at Ft Caswell.  While at Ft Caswell they will participate in a variety of activities including a historic hayride, seining, a ghost crab hunt, an estuary walk and squid dissection.  

Trip Dates: April 24-25 (Departing at 7:15AM on 4/24 and returning to Bradford at 6PM on 4/25

Destination: Ft Caswell (Oak Island)

Transportation: Charter Bus

 

Accommodations: Cabins that have bunk beds for sleeping. 

 

Food:  All meals are included in the cost of the trip. Per camp rules, no food, candy or gum in the cabins.

 

Cost of Trip: $205 for students & chaperones

 

Deposit: $100 due by March 7

Final Payment: $105 due by April 12

*Please Note: Signing up for the trip is a commitment to pay for the entire trip. If you need to cancel for any reason and we are not able to fill your spot we will not be able to refund your money.

 

Trip Eligibility

  1. Student must be in good academic standing.  Student may not be failing any classes at the end of 3rd quarter (March 7th) and in good academic standing in 4th quarter prior to the trip date.  If student is failing any classes at the end of 3rd quarter or not in good academic standing through the start of the 4th quarter, they may not be able to attend the trip. 
  2. Student may not have accrued more than 2 Days of Out of School Suspension during the 2023-2024 school year.
  3. Student must meet the following attendance requirements:

        • Students may not have more than 5 unexcused absences after January 3rd
        • Students may not have more than 8 unexcused tardies/early dismissals after January 3rd.
 

4. Permission slip must be received by the due date

        • Payment must be paid on time per due dates scheduled in field trip and overnight trip information
        • Students may not have any outstanding fees due – including but not limited to technology, repairs, club dues, athletic fees, etc.

Student Medications on the Trip:

Prescription Medications: The retreat is a school-sanctioned activity; therefore by law, every student carrying a medication is required to have a physician-completed medication authorization form indicating the name of the medication, need for the medication, dosage, time(s) of administration.  The form and the meds must be turned into the nurse by April 22, 2024. 
 
OTC Meds: Over the counter meds may be brought with a note from the parent.  Students should only bring enough for the trip and again meds should be turned into the nurse by April 22, 2024.

 

Packing List: 
  • Sleeping bag or sheets and blanket (Bedding must be packed in a bag)
  • Pillow (Bedding must be packed in a bag)
  • Sunscreen
  • 2 pairs of sneakers (1 old pair for marsh and 1 pair for daily wear)
  • Shoes for the beach (sandals / flip flops)
  • Clothes and Closed toe shoes that can get sandy, muddy and wet
  • Bag to put wet clothes and shoes in
  • Athletic Clothes (shirts and shorts or pants depending upon weather) (extra outfit for ride home)
  • Sweatshirt(s)
  • Toiletries
  • 1 Towel
  • Flashlight
  • Underwear and socks 
  • Warm Jacket for the evening
  • Rain jacket or poncho
  • Pajamas
  • Insect Repellent
  • Plastic Bag for dirty clothes
  • Refillable water bottle
 
What Not to Bring:
  • Electronics
  • Phones, mp3 players, iPods, gaming devices, Apple Watches
  • Money (no more than a few dollars to buy a snack if desired on the way back)
  • Snacks for the camp (no food is allowed in cabins, so all food will have to be disposed of that is not eaten on the bus on the way down)
  • Smart watches
  • Weapons of any kind (no pocket knives)
  • Candy or Gum
  • Drinks other than water
